Anatomy and Muscle Course
Take it one step at a time
This course is designed to successfully teach you the muscles of the body. Learning on your own sounds like a good idea, but a subject as complex as kinesiology (the study of muscles) requires a guide to be effective. I will walk you through all of the details of the muscles we cover.
Here's how I walk you through it:
Here's What You'll Learn
Visuals are key to learning
We have used 3D models throughout the anatomy and muscle course. All videos use the 3D models to help you see origins, insertions, and actions of muscles. This makes the information easy to visualize in the body. This in turn leads to better memorization, which is the name of the game when it comes to learning your muscles. Here's the full outline
Who's This For?
You, if you need to learn your muscles
The Anatomy and Muscle Course was designed for anyone who needs to learn their muscles. Whether you're a massage therapist, personal trainer, yoga teacher, physical therapist, even a doctor will benefit from the way we have laid out this course. The entire aim of this course is to help you memorize and learn the muscles, their attachments and actions.
Hi, I'm David Keil, LMT, NMT
here's why I created this course for you
Kinesiology, the study of muscles, was the first course I taught back in 1998. I taught it at a massage school in Miami, FL, where I was quickly confronted with taking a complex subject and making it accessible to students from every walk of life.
Since then teaching anatomy in the yoga world has been my passion and it has literally taken me around the world. I have been on a mission to return to teaching the basics, and make it accessible as an online course, for some time now. There are many resources out there for learning basics of kinesiology, but my experience tells me that being guided through the information by someone who knows how to break it down and explain it, is what makes the difference.
This is exactly what I did in my book, Functional Anatomy of Yoga. I took the complexity of anatomy and the complexity of yoga and brought them together in a conversational tone. Why? So that the people reading the book would understand it!

Our learning 3D muscles course includes
12 Modules, 79 lessons, covering 65 muscles
This module will introduce you to the course: Anatomy and Muscle Function.
This module covers several fundamental anatomy concepts. We'll look at how movements are described as occurring in the three planes of the body. We'll also cover directional terms to describe where things are located in the body and discuss how we describe basic movements in the body. Finally we'll take a look at types of joints in the body as well as some examples of where each type occurs.
This module covers muscle construction and function. We'll first explore what a muscle is. We'll take a look at how a muscle is constructed from the cellular level all the way to a whole muscle. We'll then explore the different ways that muscles can contract and how this affects our movement.
This module covers muscles that move the forearm. Specifically, we'll take a look at biceps brachii, brachialis, and the triceps brachii muscle.
This module covers muscles that move the scapula. Specifically, we'll cover levator scapulae, the rhomboids, trapezius, serratus anterior, and the pectoralis minor muscle.
This module covers muscles that move the shoulder joint. Specifically we'll cover the four muscles that make up the rotator cuff: supraspinatus, infraspinatus teres minor, and subscapularis. We'll also cover pectoralis major, latissimus dorsi, teres major, and the deltoid muscles.
This module covers muscles that move the knee joint. In this module we'll cover the four muscles in the quadriceps group: rectus femoris, vastus lateralis vastus intermedius, and vastus medialis. We'll also cover the three muscles that make up the hamstrings group: Semitendinosus, semimembranosus, and the biceps femoris
This module covers muscles that move the foot and ankle. Specifically, we'll cover tibialis anterior, fibularis (peroneus) longus, gastrocnemius, soleus
This module covers muscles that move the hip joint. We'll cover the five adductor muscles: pectineus, adductor brevis, adductor longus, gracilis, and adductor magnus. We'll take a look at the three gluteal muscles: gluteus minimus, gluteus medius, and gluteus maximus. We'll explore the six lateral rotators: piriformis, obturator internus, obturator externus, gemellus superior, gemellus inferior, and the quadratus femoris. We'll also cover the sartorius muscle and the iliopsoas muscle in this module.
This module covers muscles that move the head and neck. Specifically, we'll cover sternocleidomastoid, the scalenes, and two splenius muscles: splenius capitis and splenius cervicis.
This module covers muscles that move the head and neck. Specifically, we'll cover sternocleidomastoid, the scalenes, and two splenius muscles: splenius capitis and splenius cervicis.
This module covers the main muscles that are involved with breathing. Specifically, we'll cover the diaphragm, the external intercostals and the internal intercostals.
